"U3A is a movement which enables people in their Third Age to continue and share the journey
of life-long learning"

Hon. Dr. Barry O. Jones, AO (Patron of U3A  Alliance Australia)

Indigenous Cultural Significance
Mudgee is full of Aboriginal history and was home to the Wiradjuri Nation which extended from the Blue Mountain eastern ranges to the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee rivers in the west, with the Murray River forming the southern border and the Wellington plains and hills the northern border.
The Wiradjuri Nation was split, and sub split into many tribes. In Mudgee the Mowgee clan extended over a 50 km radius. The Mowgee women’s totem was the wedge tail eagle (Mullian) and the men’s totem was the crow (Waggan). They settled around the Cudgegong River, using its resources for food and water.
Many Mudgee districts were named after the local Wiradjuri tribal areas, including Mudgee itself (Moothi, nest in the hills), Lue (Loowee, a chain of water holes), Gulgong (a gully), Wollar (a rock water hole), Menah (flat country), Eurunderee (a local tree), Guntawang (a peaceful place), Cooyal (dry country), Wilbertree (a long switch), Burrendong (darker than usual). The Aboriginal name for the Rylstone area was Combalong.

Class of the Month -

Class of the Month - Shut Up, Sit Down and Write
This is a writing group intended to develop a writing habit for participants. During our two-hour sessions, we spend 15 minutes discussing a prompt. Term One, we’re analysing an Ernest Hemingway short story for story structure, and literary devices. This is followed by a one-and-a-half-hour block of quiet writing, completing the session with shared works and feedback. The sessions are held at Kildallon and Gulgong Library. Kay Binns’s (who turns 90 this year) kindly volunteered her piece written during a session at Gulgong Library, responding to the prompt First or Last Kiss.
That Kiss I remember - the first time I kissed my friend Daphne; she had turned 21 and we were having a celebration. We decided to have a small celebration, just the two of us as she had already marked the occasion with her family. We decided to go to one of our favourite places—the Botanical Gardens, in Sydney. The weather was very fine, we thought we’d have a picnic—each taking a contribution. As I am vegetarian, the sandwiches were salad and Daphne, aware of my inclination, brought a nicely put together salad, with all the trimmings and some nice special bread.
Seeing Daphne, looking her very best, with a red shawl she often wore, was looking her loveliest, I embraced her and gave her a kiss. The kiss symbolised and reinforced our maturing friendship - our fondness for each other. I look back on that time as one of my happiest memories. As I no longer live in Sydney, and Daphne and I have somehow drifted apart - it is indeed a happy memory. It symbolises one of my most enduring and happy memories. That kiss was not, of course, the only time I had kissed Daphne. She will always remain in my heart as my close friend, and the memory is a happy one.
Life brings us all sorts of trials, some--at the time - seeming more than we can bear. But on the balance sheet are the happy memories. A kiss always seems full of promise and is fondly remembered. So it is that now, approaching 90, I look back with happy memories of the time when my friendship with Daphne flourished and that fond kiss.
